FUSION 3D-print porcelain

arachaic + state of the art technique

Fusion 3d-print is a contemporary ceramic artwork. In this series, I have combined modern 3D printing techniques with ancient traditional methods.

These series consists of composite porcelain objects. At first glance, they appear to be 'ordinary footed bowls', but upon closer inspection, they reveal a double bottom. The base of the objects is made from a solid porcelain foundation, which I had printed using a 3D printer. However, the bowl on the foot is hand-formed, following ancient traditional principles for shaping clay utensils. To accentuate this archaic method, I made certain areas of the bowls paper-thin, allowing light to partially shine through.

error

With the use of 3D printing, mass production can be achieved in a short amount of time. However, this is not inspiring to me. It only becomes interesting when the printer deviates. In FUSION 3D print, I intentionally made use of 'errors' during the printing process. The printer did not perfectly layer the porcelain, resulting in a unique new pattern. This is almost impossible to replicate. Therefore, even with a pre-programmed 3D printer, a unique object is created.

hunters

Ceramics have been made since the dawn of human history. The oldest ceramics ever found by archaeologists are figurines about 25,000 years old, created by mammoth hunters. What is truly remarkable is that for thousands of years, ceramics have not only served as utilitarian objects but also as works of art. A ceramic bowl is such a fundamental object, a symbol of daily human life, and it was this very concept that formed the foundation for this series.

state of the art technique + history

My fascination with the historical component of ceramics, combined with cutting-edge technology, is embodied in this series of art objects. 3D printing clay offers humanity entirely new possibilities, such as even printing houses, opening up endless new opportunities. Yet, for me, the historical aspect remains an inexhaustible source of inspiration and depth, as it speaks to the journey humanity has taken.
