Art Piece Landscape in Porcelain
Abstract
this art piece landscape in porcelain is an abstract translation of my landscapes in oil paint. For years, I have been painting Dutch landscapes, in which the theme of light plays an important role. In this object, I have reduced the landscape to its essence: the construction of the landscape in different layers in combination with light.
Scratches and scars
To emphasise the essence, the skin of the porcelain has also been left raw. All scratches and scars can be seen. This makes the work extra pure a leaves the basic material porcelain fully intact.
Light-play
The layers are composed of porcelain clay. These are fired so high that the porcelain becomes semi-transparent. Because some parts become transparent and others do not, a dynamic work has been created that changes depending on the light source. In doing so, I deliberately did not use colour so that all attention is focused on the shape.
Wolf in sheep's clothes
I find fascinating not only the contrast in light and dark areas, but also the contrast between the soft appearance of the light gently shining through the porcelain and the hard unbendable material. Porcelain has an intriguing contradictory character. On the one hand, it is a hard, unbendable and sharp material. On the other hand, this special property of transparency makes it look soft, subtle and cuddly. This contradictory character challenges me to push the limits of the material and lead the viewer astray.
This contradiction is also evoked by the fact that, in the case of this artwork, it is not immediately clear what kind of material is involved. This is caused by the fact that the porcelain is partly transparent and unprocessed. At first glance, this object appears to be made of paper. But nothing is what it seems.
