waardeloos

By encasing discarded textiles in clay, an ancient and enduring material. A tension emerges between transience and continuity, softness and hardness.

The work appears solid, at times monumental, yet remains empty within. Hollow, like a discarded piece of textile. Its structures, however, remain visible: folds, seams, fibres.

Now captured in clay as a fossil of our time. What appears enduring and valuable reveals itself to be hollow and fragile within. The work invites reflection—not only on what we wear, but also on the traces we leave behind.

Yet the work is not without irony. It appears solid, almost monumental, but is in fact hollow and fragile. The texture of the original textile remains visible, like a fossil captured in clay. The structures of the fabric remain present: folds, seams, fibres. What appears beautiful ultimately reveals itself as delicate and vulnerable.

Arte Povera

This installation forms a contemporary echo of the Arte Povera movement that emerged in Italy in the 1960s. Artists created works from used, simple, everyday and supposedly worthless materials. It was an artistic means of questioning industrialisation and overconsumption. In this installation, that historical trajectory is extended into our own time, in which one of the most transient of objects, the fast-fashion garment, becomes a new bearer of meaning. The philosophy feels uncomfortably current. And it is precisely here that the work reveals its strength: it resists. By subjecting discarded materials to an everyday substance such as clay, the artist gives them a new, enduring body. What was intended to be temporary, rapidly produced and quickly forgotten is now preserved. A piece of textile that might otherwise disappear becomes a sculptural monument to our time.
